Residue Free Hair

Here are some examples of products, ingredients, and other substances that are blockers and cause build–up.

SILICONES – these are the most preventative component found in most shampoos, conditioners and styling products on the market. Most silicones are not (water) soluble. For example – Dimethicone. This component will create build–up on your hair. It also clogs the hair cuticle and scalp follicles, causing hair thinning or hair loss.

Not sure how to identify silicones in your product?

  • Silicone ingredients often end in ‘cone,’ ‘conol,’ ‘col’ or ‘xane.’ Silicones are synthetic polymers, similar to plastics and rubber that coat the hair.
  • These ingredients are in glazes, hair sprays, glosses, serums, pomades, waxes, gels and shampoo and conditioner.
  • Using Clarifying Shampoo the same day or just before a Hairprint treatment to remove any residue is ideal.

Recommendation: We recommend that for suspected silicone build- up, wash hair with Hairprint Chelating Shampoo. You will find that one wash may leave the silicon sticky, repeat wash as many times as you need to remove the sticky feeling. 24 hours before your treatment is ideal. Do not use any other shampoo, conditioner, or other styling product.

Below are examples of Silicones in your shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, glosses, serums and more.

  • Dimethicone
  • Dimethiconol
  • Dimethicone copolyol
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Phenyl Trimethicone
  • Methicone
  • Cyclomethicone / Cyclopentasiloxane

PROTEINS – Many homecare products contain protein. The truth is the protein is usually the window dressing of the product. Leave–in protein treatments or styling products with ingredients like keratin either release formaldehyde or come fused with it. So when is applied, it causes internal and external residue on the hair.

Recommendation:  If you’re using a protein infused leave-in product, try to discontinue use 2 – 3 weeks before applying the Hairprint treatment. If you have had a hair straightening treatment like a Keratin or Brazilian blowout, or something similar in the past 2 – 3 months, please our read up on Transitioning Tips.

Please be aware that should you not adhere to this recommendation, the protein treatments will block Hairprint from accessing the inside of the hair where the treatment effects remain.

Below are examples of proteins that you may be using or have used. Please note the treatment dates as this has a direct impact on the success of your Hairprint treatment.

  • Keratin Treatment or Brazilian Blowout (1 – 3 months).
  • Silk, Corn, Wheat, Soy, Vegetable Peptides / Proteins (lasts 2 – 3 weeks after use).

QUATS –  generally categorised as ‘natural’ polymers. Also known as bromine or chlorine salts of ammonia that act as anti–static agents, disinfectants, and algaecides. Many ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ hair care products often justify the usage of QUATS because it is made up from many ingredients such as turnip oil, sugar, honey, guar, etc. The concern, however, lies not with what a product’s composition is but how the product affects the hair.

QUATS “defrizz hair” making it softer. However, it is the MSG of hair care. It is addictive, can be harmful and often unnecessary. Many QUATS are hormone and endocrine disrupters, meaning they can cause acute dermatitis, and release formaldehyde.

Build-up appears on the inside and outside of the hair and scalp. The result is a decline in the health of your hair from the inside out. When rinsing hair, the toxins flow to our water supply, spreading the toxins to our fish. If your hair is truly healthy, it will not need synthetic treatments. Our advice is AVOID THEM where you can.

Recommendation: If you have used any product that contains QUATS, please discontinue any products that may contain QUATS ingredients for at least 2 – 3 weeks before using Hairprint Colour Restorer. We recommend using our Chelating shampoo once every seven days during this waiting period. After the waiting period, you are ready to treat your hair with the Hairprint Colour Restorer. Use the Hairprint Colour Restorer the day before or night before the treatment. Use only the detoxifying shampoo.

Examples of QUATS:

  • Guar / honey / beet etc.
  • Hydroxyproplytrimonium chloride
  • Behentrimonium chloride
  • Methosulfate
  • Stearylkoniumchloride
  • Tetraethylammonium bromide
  • Dideclydimethylammonium chloride
  • Babassuamidopropyltrimonium Methosulfate
  • Behenamidopropyltrimonium Methosulfate

MINERALS/RESIDUE – If you have hard water you will need to use our Chelating Shampoo to remove calcium (lime), magnesium and iron that sits on the hair because of the water.

Minerals create a wall that is similar to that of bathtub ring; coating the hair. Certain minerals can block Hairprint and alter results after treatment. We recommend that you use the Chelating Shampoo pre–Hairprint treatment, or even post swimming to remove chlorine deposits. The shampoo will eliminate and continue to remove calcium deposits that build up over time that often lodges itself in the hair follicle causing limp, lifeless hair and hair loss.

The Chelating Shampoo can stop an itching scalp, returning your hair to its natural shine and body. The use of our Chelating Shampoo also improves the coverage and success of your Hairprint Colour Restorer treatment.

If your hair begins to look darker or brassy at three weeks, it is due to the mineral content in the water. The mineral deposits can be removed with one wash of Chelating Shampoo.

Here are examples of minerals found in hard water:

  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Copper
  • Magnesium
  • Chlorine

Recommendation: Wash hair once or twice (need dependent). Wash hair at least 24 hours before your treatment. Use no other shampoo, condition or styling products. Within 24 hours or less, use your included Prepare packet and our mixes as directed in your Hairprint Colour Restorer Kit.

CHLORINE

If you swim, please place a protective layer of a conditioner or oil on the hair before swimming to keep the hair from receiving too much contact with chlorinated water. You could also use a swimming cap over the protected hair. This protective measure should also help the Chelating Shampoo from removing too much colour post-Hairprint treatment.

OILS/INFUSIONS/TREATMENTS/BASES:

Oils are healthy for hair. If they are from real, excellent sources such as organic oils, shea butter and other raw and unusual ingredients, great. However, for Hairprint Colour Restorer to work and be successful, you must remove all oils from the hair. Oils take approximately 7 – 10 days to dissipate naturally.

Recommendation: To clean the hair best, we recommend you use the Chelating Shampoo.

Examples of Oils – Infusions / Treatments / Bases are:

  • Castile soaps
  • Hair bar soaps
  • Oil listed as top three ingredient ingredients in the product or any additional oil treatments and infusions.

The above list can never truly be complete because companies have found new ways to produce new compounds from new and different ingredients all the time. These examples are a mere guideline of what to look out for in commonly used hair products.
